Our Town
Guilford Center Stage returns to its venue at Broad Brook Community Center after a 3-year intermission while the building was being fully renovated we are now fully accessible, including our new elevator to the theater space! We return in 2023 to a two-production schedule, with plays in May and October. For this, our 10th production, Ian Hefele directs a company of community actors in Our Town, the Thornton Wilder play which revolutionized American theater and won the Pulitzer in drama for 1938.
The play was ground-breaking for its immediacy, its lack of conventional scenery, and for breaking down the "fourth wall" that had characterized theater up to that time. Its characters and action depict the lives of ordinary people in a small New England town, based by the author upon our neighboring Monadnock region in New Hampshire, where Wilder wrote the play.
In fact, several of our actors are from nearby New Hampshire, joining players from Guilford, other Vermont towns, and from across the border in Massachusetts.
Again, the Community Center is now fully, wheelchair accessible, from our new parking lot, into the building, to restrooms and with our elevator to the second floor theater space.
Our Town is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.com
