Kauai Songwriters Music Festival
The Kauai Songwriters Music Festival is a celebration of the art of songwriting. Hawaii State Poet Laureate Kealoha will serve as the emcee and perform some of his slam poetry work that has been performed internationally, and for President Barrack Obama at the White House.
Songwriter Ken Emerson and special guests will be featured. Ken Emerson is one of the worlds most highly regarded traditional Hawaiian slack key & steel guitarists living today. He is a monster player of both and he switches easily between them during his performances, laying his guitar on his lap and picking up a steel bar for an instrumental interlude. Emerson is famous for his one-of-a-kind slack/steel style playing of vintage acoustic steel-bodied National Resonator guitars. Emerson won the prestigious Kahili Award for perpetuating Hawaiian culture and was a featured artist and composer on the first-ever National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Grammy Award-winning Best Hawaiian Album. Emersons playing was also featured on Donald Fagens (Steely Dan) Grammy Award-winning Morph the Cat. He has many additional touring/recording credits including Jackson Brown, Boz Scaggs, Charlie Musselwhite, Taj Mahal, and Elvin Bishop.
Internationally known, longtime Kauai resident Allan Thomas is a second featured songwriter. Allan has released eight albums to date. He has worked and performed with Cannon Ball Adderly, Donald Fagen (Steely Dan), David Crosby, and Graham Nash to name a few. Allans album Deep Water was nominated for Rock Album of the Year in the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts 2012 Na Hoku Hanohano Music Awards. Allan owns Bamboo Studios on the North Shore of Kauai.
Kauai is home for an incredible array of local songwriters, a sampling of which will be showcased at the festival. Show cased local songwriters include: Bill Dick and friends, Chris White-Root and friends, Kauai Greenhouse Band, Kimberly Hope, Kirby Keough, Maria Stice, Terry J Low and friends, and Warren Dastrup and friends.
This event is being held with the support of the Hawaii Tourism Authority through the Community Enrichment Program Arts Kauai, DBA as Kauai Songwriters is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization
