Adrian West Trio at Piedmont Center for the Arts
The Adrian West Trio is an Oakland-based ensemble that plays original acoustic rock songs plus the odd cover song. With Adrian West on acoustic guitar and lead vocals, Amy Obenski on backing vocals, percussion and piano, and Jodi Durst on upright bass, they comprise three-fifths of the Adrian West Band, whose sound has been described as "Paul Simon meets Dave Matthews". On Sat. March 5th the Trio will perform at the Piedmont Center for the Arts from 7 to 9pm. This will be an intimate show featuring all-acoustic renditions of their songs.
The listening room at the Piedmont Center for the Arts also serves as an art gallery, and the works of local artist Robert Brokl will be on display - more at www.robertbrokl.com. The room also sports a grand piano which will be put to good use on a couple songs!
Proof of vaccination and wearing of masks will be required for this show. Refreshments will be served.
Adrian West grew up in Montreal where he studied violin at the McGill Conservatory of Music. He moved to the Bay Area in 1995 and played violin in several bands, including one that opened for Taj Mahal before a sold-out audience at The Fillmore. Before long he started his own band and has been performing around the Bay Area ever since.
Adrian's approach to songwriting starts with the music. He believes a song must stand on its own musically, independent of the lyrics. He usually composes the underlying music, including the melody that will be sung, from start to finish before writing a single lyric. It's only once he has something with solid musical "legs" that he starts toying with lyrics that reflect the mood of the music and his own musings, passions and concerns of the day.
Ever the realist, Adrian's lyrics strike a delicate balance between hope and despair, between poetic language and social justice messaging. He takes peculiar delight in setting serious topics to joyful music.
Amy Obenski began singing harmonies and playing percussion with Adrian West just four months ago. She also performs as a songwriter and musical artist, singing and playing piano or guitar over her soulful, introspective songs. She's based out of San Francisco but has toured throughout the U.S., France and the UK, and had a song placed on Grey's Anatomy in 2007. Amy studied music at UC Santa Cruz.
Jodi Durst is a freelance upright & electric bassist in the SF Bay Area. Since the 1990s she has had the opportunity to record, tour and locally perform with a lot of talented artists that range in styles across indie rock, jazz, hip hop, punk rock, soul/r&B and classical music. Playing music has allowed her many fun and exciting experiences such as touring in Europe and parts of the US; recording in the legendary Radio 1 John Peel Sessions and Stinson Beachs beautiful Panoramic House studios; or performing in the produce section of a grocery store that hosts live music in Santa Monica. Jodi currently records and performs with Zelma Stone, Adrian West, Louiza, Jazzphoria, and the Bonafides.
