The Rural Refugee Project
Witness the resilience of one somali refugee; her growth, trials and triumphs, her ability to thrive in a completely foreign environment: Willmar, MN.
The Rural Refugee Project is a local initiative that uses documentary photography to build cross-cultural relationships and contextualize the experience of refugees in the Willmar Lakes Area community. Erica Dischino, photojournalist at the West Central Tribune, has been photographing the life of Hamdi Kosar, a 22-year-old Somali refugee and Willmar resident since the fall of 2017. This past August, a long with Hamdis friend, mentor and colleague Jessica Rohloff, they travelled to Kenya to visit the Dagahaley Refugee Camp where Hamdi was born and several places throughout Nairobi. The project was supported by a Southwest Minnesota Arts Council grant, project funding from Willmar Lakes Area Vision 2040 and the Willmar Rotary Club.
