March 2020 LAI Golden Gate Tour
Come join us for this special pre-opening tour of the new downtown Ferry terminal and public plaza, followed by a convivial happy hour at the Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant to slake your seafaring thirst.
The new terminal and plaza are significant civic projects that will transform the Ferry Building area and become a catalyst for further improvements. We will learn about the larger area Master Plan, born out of the Loma Prieta earthquake, that has transformed the area from its past life as a service corridor to a center of activity and regional interconnection.
The Ferry Terminal and the Embarcadero Plaza will be elevated to protect from rising sea levels and storm surges that increasingly affect San Francisco Bay and coastal areas world-wide. The plaza will be a place for civic activity, opening up new views and perspectives to the bay at this historic waterfront setting.
The tour will commence in the Ports Pier 1 Conference Room at 3:30pm, followed by a hard hat tour of the new terminal and plaza. Thereafter, we will repair to the Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant (located in the Ferry Building) for happy hour.
TOUR GUIDES
Mike Gougherty is a Senior Transportation Planner with the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA). Before joining WETA, Mike worked as an Access Planner for the Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) where he managed bicycle access and station wayfinding projects. His current responsibilities at WETA include capital project development, fare policy, station access planning, and ridership forecasting. Mike is a member of the TRB Ferry Transportation Committee. Mr. Gougherty is from Detroit, MI and is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a B.A. in Political Science. Mike received a Master of City and Regional Planning degree from the University of California-Berkeley and takes transit to work every day.
Dan Hodapp is an urban designer, planner and landscape architect for the Port of San Francisco. He prepared The Waterfront Design & Access Element, an award-winning urban design plan for the San Francisco waterfront and is chairperson of the City's Waterfront Design Advisory Committee. He has designed several of the new public spaces along the San Francisco waterfront, conducts major planning and design studies for streets and specific areas of the waterfront, and provides architectural review and direction for waterfront improvements.
Boris Dramov is an Architect and Urban Designer, who has worked on many waterfront locations - both nationally and internationally. In San Francisco, he has worked very closely with the Port and the City for many decades in the planning and design of the Ferry Building area. He was the site design architect for the improvements on the city and bayside of the Ferry Building, the Mid-Embarcadero transit, pedestrian, and open space improvements, and is the Design Principal for WETAs Ferry Terminal project south of the Ferry Building and adjacent to the Agriculture Building.
