The Living Breath Indigenous Foods and Ecological Knowledge Symposium, May 1-2, 2020
University of Washington Campus, wbaltx Intellectual House
Seattle, WA
Share this event:

Our 2020 theme is Food is Resistance! Water. Soil. Seeds. This year our speakers, panels and discussion groups will focus on the central role that maintaining and revitalizing Indigenous food systems play in resisting colonization. Centering our traditional foods and ecological knowledge and strengthening our Indigenous foodways reaffirms our relationships to our homelands and waterways and supports individual and community health.

Our event regularly draws over 250 people from the UW campus community, the regional tribal and urban Indigenous communities, and attendees and participants from Alaska, British Columbia, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. Recently we have been joined by the Maori in an exciting knowledge partnership. Our symposium is a signature event for the UW webaltx Intellectual House and has become an important venue for bringing together people from diverse communities, groups, and organizations who share the same commitment to protecting Indigenous homelands and the environment. It serves to foster dialogue and build collaborative networks as Indigenous peoples strive to sustain their cultural food practices and preserve their healthy relationships to the land, water, and all living things. Join us to share knowledge, experience and expertise on tribal food sovereignty initiatives, food justice and security, traditional foods and health, indigenous foods systems and global climate change. We invite all of you who hold these issues dear to join us for this important conversation. Your voice is welcomed!

All prices include continental breakfast items with traditional NW foods lunch included in one or two day tickets. We start each day of the symposium at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 5PM. Tickets will also be available at the event both days.
