Afro-Cuban songs of the Yoruba people has been preserved in Cuba by the Lucumí descendants, and traditionalists for hundreds of years. Starting in the 1500's, Spain brought over a million Africans to work for no pay at the sugar cane plantations in the island of Cuba. Ever since, Afro-Cuban songs and prayers have been orally shared, and preserved throughout Cuba.

Orichas are manifestations of Nature, and these beautiful songs will continue to be preserved, and will continue to evolve for many generations to come. The origins of Yoruba culture is presently located in Ifé. Nigeria, in West Africa.

Recording artist Virginia López is also a percussionist, and she will teach Afro-Cuban songs in relationship to key Afro-Cuban rhythms patterns of claves.

Virginia Lopez is a Yemayá Priestess in the Lucumí traditional practices. Madrina Amelia Pedroso, ibbaé bayen tonú, initiated Virginia López in 1999, in Havana, Cuba.  Virginia has been teaching songs and Afro-Cuban drum rhythms in Portland, Oregon, for several decades.

All levels are welcomed in this song class. Be ready to "walk as you sing" in order to embody the songs in relationship to your body movement.
This song class is a group class, and space is limited.
Class will be in the SE area of Portland.
