Lecture - 7 CEUs
Registration starts at 7:45am Course starts at 8:15am
This program will have two parts. The first half will discuss the addictive nature, abuse, and medicinal benefits of opioids. For centuries opioids have been used to control pain and suffering, but at what cost to us, our families, and our dental practices? How does the opioid crisis impact your daily treatment plans? This section will uncover fascinating details regarding the origins and influence of opioids and their significant effect on our society today. The second half of the day will be devoted to the most common physician-prescribed medications taken by your patients that may impact their dental treatment. What common antifungal medication is contraindicated in patients taking clopidogrel and what is the most common antibiotic prophylaxis required for patients with an orthopedic prosthesis? What is the new FDA warning about codeine and tramadol in children? How is marijuana going to impact your dental treatment? Familiarity with these drugs will provide the dental practitioner with a better appreciation for the health profile of their dental patient.
At the conclusion of this course attendees will know: 1. Why your patient is taking their medications 2. Prescriptions, OTC medications, and foods that could adversely interact with dental drugs 3. The impact of medical marijuana on your dental practice 4. How to minimize prescribing opioids for surgeries 5. How to combine analgesics to maximize their effects 6. Current recommendations for SBE and orthopedic prosthesis prophylaxis
