Remde Show at AMC @ UCC / AMC2019
The 15-strong troupe bring colourful, rhythmic, authentic local dances from Côte D'Ivoire (W Africa). Zaouli comes from the Gouro expressing beauty and joy; it has an important place in our culture and hearts. Tématé, inspired by the Kono dance, is a joyful dance from western Côte d'Ivoire (Man) created by the Wobés people in the 1960's. Tématé ("more beautiful") tells the story of rice, an important staple, from planting to cooking and eating. It is danced by young girls wearing a cowrie hat and a wide leather belt with the dancers simulating the movements of the workers.
The group Rem'de (Musical research of dance and expression) is an artistic ensemble working to discover and recover regional folkloric and heritage dances of Ivory Coast. Created in 2003 by Mrs Sery Yao, the idea came to her after her return home having completed her studies in Montreal, when she realized that Ivorian culture was disappearing in favour of other, non-indigenous cultures. So was born Rem'de.
Since its creation, Rem'de has been invited to perform in a number of events around the world. In particular, the Tizy Ouzou Arab-African Folk Festival, those of Timgad, Sidy Bel Abess, Asfoun, Tzi Rached and Hurricane.
Having languished in cultural shadows for many years, last year, Mrs Sery Yao, made the official presentation of her dance company in the presence of the authorities of the Yopougon municipality (a large suburb of Ivory Coast's capital city, Abidjan), the media and the general public. During the meeting, she explained the financial difficulties faced by the company.
Ivory Coast has a large number of cultures and traditions, so the company must make many trips to different regions of the country to immerse themselves in the codes and cultures of the people. Also the making of traditional costumes is expensive. In addition to this, there is a lack of public awareness of the group. "In other countries it's the red carpet, the shouting, the public, but here when you get to the airport it's on tiptoe," she said.
The company has also received several laurels that allowed it to climb to a higher level with 20 trophies and awards to date to their credit. Among these are the 2010 World Master Award, the 2017 Excellence Award.
