The Poor of New York
The Poor of New York by Dion Boucicault
Just before the financial crash of 1837, a sea captain entrusts his fortune to an unscrupulous banker. Twenty years later, the banker has grown rich off the other man's money, when a second crash takes the captain's family only means of support. Their lives intertwined with a young aristocrat, an immigrant family, and the shady, whimsical, opportunistic thief, Badger, all struggle with newfound poverty. But in the melodramatic universe, deliverance comes from unexpected places.
In the spirit of Dickens and Hugo, Boucicault staged social problem plays with outsized villains, inspirational heroes, and comic theatrical flare that defined the best of the age. Set in the notorious Five Points neighborhood of the Lower East Side, The Poor of New York confronts real social crises with optimism and sympathy that titillate and provoke 160 years after it's premiere.
