Indian-Jazz Celebration: Making Musical Magic with Phil Scarff, Ravi Albright and Cascade Jazz
This unique Jazz/Indian crossover event features saxophonist Phil Scarff and tabla artist Ravi Albright taking exciting musical adventures with John Chmaj and Cascade Jazz.
Phil Scarff is a pioneer in the performance of North Indian classical music on soprano saxophone who exquisitely captures the music's subtlety and depth. Hes toured India annually for over a decade and performed Indian classical music at top venues there, including the legendary Tansen Samaroh (Gwalior); Nehru Center (Mumbai); and Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture (Kolkata). Phil is also a master jazz saxophonist, leads world-jazz groups Natraj and Lewis Porter-Phil Scarff Group, and is featured on over 35 CDs/DVDs.

Ravi Albright is a professional tabla player and Executive Director of the Seattle Tabla Institute celebrating 10 years and 40,000 hours of music programming in King County. Ravi is also a former Adjunct Professor of Tabla at Lewis & Clark college in Portland, OR. He is one of only a few ganda-banda ( formally recognized ) disciples of Pandit Anindo Chatterjee of Kolkata, India. He performs regularly in
the Seattle area for classical Hindustani, Western classical, and fusion ensembles. Ravi has studied accompaniment from and performed with many accomplished musicians such as Ustad Amjad, Ali Khan, Ut. Shahid Parvez Khan, Pt. Tejendra Majumdar, Pt. Nayan Ghosh, Pt. Sugato Nag, Pt. Kushal Das, G.S. Sachdev, Deepak Ram, and many others. He has performed in the Seattle area, and throughout the United States and Canada.
John Chmaj (pronounced Shmay) has been performing in the Seattle area since 1996. John received his B.A. in Jazz Composition/Arranging from the Berklee College of Music, and M.M. in Theoretical Studies from the New England Conservatory, where he also served as faculty early in his career. He has lectured and performed in both Europe and America and has over 200 original jazz compositions to his credit. John has been Musical Director of the Cascade Jazz Ensemble for the past 19 years. The group has appeared in many annual community festival concerts and has made 3 CD's. John has also composed multiple multi-media jazz concerts featuring animated video, in relation to modern art, nature, and climate change.
