Advance Metadata Fair - Big Location Data, Privacy and Law Enforcement
What's it about?

In April 2017, Australia introduced the metadata retention scheme. This law mandates internet providers and telecommunications companies keep, and store information generated by customers calling, texting or using the internet. In early 2019, Parliament may commence a review of the regulatory framework. This presentation will summarise Stanley's PhD research into the strengths and the opportunities of the regulatory framework as well as analyse the powers it grants to law enforcement agencies to collect and use Big Location Data vis-a-vis the privacy tests introduced in 2017, in relation to court cases and the functionality of data analytics.

Who's it for?

Anyone interested in learning more about the policies and regulation surrounding telecommunications, location data and privacy.

The Presenter

Dr. Stanley Shanapinda is a Research Associate at the Faculty of Engineering at La Trobe University in Melbourne. He has over 16 years experience in the telecommunications sector as a lawyer and regulatory CEO in Namibia and South Africa. Stanley is a D2D CRC PhD graduate from UNSW Australian Defence Force Academy, in the school of Engineering and IT, for his interdisciplinary research in 4G Long-Term Evolution location data, personal information and privacy.

Stanley has lectured on the regulation of Information and Communication Technology and published work on Metadata4Good at Foundacao Getulio Vargas in Brazil. Stanley has also lectured in cyber security, telecommunications policy and regulation, and digital transformation at the LINK Centre at Wits University in Johannesburg, his alma mater, where he is also a Research Associate.
