Did you know that 1 in 6 American children struggle with hunger? After leaning this statistic I decided to make hunger and food insecurity the focus of my senior project at Jewish Community High School of the Bay. For my project, I am organizing an Empty Bowls event. The Empty Bowl Project is a grassroots organization that raises awareness about hunger through education and the arts. The first Empty Bowls event was held in 1990 at a high school in Michigan. Students made bowls and soup and had a sale with the proceeds going to a local food bank. The idea caught on and millions of dollars have been raised over the last 28 years. At my Empty Bowls event in Berkeley on April 22nd, you will enjoy a simple and delicious dinner of soup, provided by the SF Soup Company, and bread, provided by Metropolis Bakery, in a bowl made by a local ceramicist which you can take home. So that each time you eat from that bowl you will have a gentle reminder of the work that needs to be done to make sure others have full bowls and full stomachs. The evening will include a brief presentation about issues of hunger and food insecurity and participants will leave with further steps they can take to help fight hunger. There will also be great music and interesting conversation. All proceeds from this event go to the Alameda County Community Food Bank: https://www.accfb.org If you cant attend the event but would still like to donate, please go to https://donate.accfb.org And let me know that you donated so I can thank you personally and count your gift toward the success of another Empty Bowls event!
