en Taiko Concert 2018 "SAMURAI ROCK"
en Taiko is happy to announce its 7th annual concert, " SAMURAI ROCK." For more than a decade, en Taiko has brought the energy, discipline, and tradition of Japanese taiko drumming to the youth and adults of the Portland area.
Samurai Rock will showcase a unique collaboration among students and taiko masters from Portland and Japan. The performance will include en Taiko, a Portland-based K-12 taiko group, Jotaro Yoshimura (a Japanese master instructor of taiko and flute), and Koseisen, his high school and college-aged taiko group from Japan. It is an exciting opportunity for the students to showcase their power and artistry in front of a diverse audience. The concert will be directed by Kazuyo Ito, en Taikos artistic director, and feature new, original compositions, including Yoshimuras dynamic taiko and flute piece, called DEN, and the debut of en Taiko's new marimba piece composed by Eric Schopmeyer. In addition, Koseisen's choreography of dance and drumming will immerse the audience in the rich music and art of Japanese culture. This event is also the first part of a cultural exchange between Portland and Japan, as members of en Taiko will travel to Japan this summer to study and perform with Yoshimura, Koseisen, and other taiko groups across their country. Proceeds from " SAMURAI ROCK will help support the costs of en Taikos summer performances in Japan, as well as the ongoing development of en Taiko in Portland.
