On April 25, 2015, the small, impoverished Himalayan nation of Nepal was hit with the biggest earthquake it has suffered in 80 years, somewhere between 7.8 and 8.1 on the Richter scale. There have been over 50 aftershocks so far, some over 6.0. To date, the confirmed death toll is above 5,000 but many estimate it could reach 10,000 and higher. The quake affected 8 million people across 39 districts. Huge numbers of families have been displaced, houses destroyed and some villages practically wiped out. As is the case with earthquakes, the danger for increased disease, such as cholera, is very high in the weeks following. In addition to the human cost, many of Nepal important national heritage places, landmarks and famous temples were damaged or destroyed.
A number of Bay Area musicians are coming together on Tuesday, May 19 at the Elbo Room in San Francisco for a benefit concert with all proceeds to going to a small, grassroots non-profit organization led by Nepalis on the east coast: Lo Nyamship Association.
Lo Nyamship Association: Lo Nyamship Association is a small, grassroots non-profit group and will use funds to help people in the hard hit Ghorka and Sindhupalchowk districts as well as Mustang, providing food and direct financial assistance to displaced families. Lo Nyampship was recently founded by Norbu Bista, a native of Mustang, Nepal who has been a leader and organizer of Nepali communities in New Jersey and New York for over 15 years.
