Roots and Ribs. SAMADHI
Samadhi (समाधि) creates some of the most unique and beautiful music in the world. The quintet connects the great music of India and the West, respecting the deep classical traditions of both cultures while simultaneously exploring new territory. The ensemble takes its name from the ancient yogic concept of heightened consciousness. When one reaches Samadhi the mind becomes still and the spirit free.

Samadhi is an all-star ensemble that includes cellist Ashley Bathgate, pianist and composer Michael Harrison, percussionist and composer Payton MacDonald, tabla drummer Nitin Mitta, and N. Indian classical vocalist Sanhita Nandi. All of these musicians have toured the globe as soloists and as members of major ensembles including Bang on a Can All Stars, Alarm Will Sound, Vijay Iyer Ensemble, and have performed in the best venues and festivals in the world, including Carnegie Hall, Barbican, Musickebouw, Walt Disney Hall, Saptak Festival, Sawai Gandharva festival, and many, many others. They received their training from the most renowned teachers and schools, and have actively maintained the depth of tradition they received from an early age. This is not "fusion" music, but rather a new kind of classical music (please see links below to individual websites).

Samadhi's music displays a unique mix of newly composed and arranged music, mostly based on ancient ragas, Indian vocal compositions and rhythmic cycles, with structured improvisation. Their concerts include stunning tone clouds, which shimmer and glow, creating massive constellations of justly-tuned harmonics and connecting melodies, inviting the listener's consciousness to expand and deepen. From there they move into compositions that have a deep groove. Majestic and powerful music springs from a creative connection of ancient melodies and modern harmonies, supported by Nitin's drumming wizardry, pulling the listener ever deeper into a unique state of wonder.
