E'-Bon E'-Bon: An American Immigration Story
E'-Bon E'-Bon (One-Half One-Half), is a new work from Portland vocalist Lyndee Mah that weaves music, monologue, dramatic images and song into a performance memoir about her Chinese-European-American heritage.
A compelling narrative traces Mah's Welsh forbears from the 1700s, as well as two generations of her Chinese ancestors, across two oceans in search of brighter economic futures in America. These immigrant stories are told through visual imagery and video interwoven with Mah's versatile improvised musical stylings and performance art.
The second half of the show blends live storytelling, song, and borderline stand-up comedy to depict what it was like growing up "half-Chinese" in 1960s Idaho and Mah's search to find a place of belonging. Thought-provoking and moving, Mah's sharp wit sheds light on the complicated experience of being E'-Bon E'-Bon in America.
