Please join us for this special event on Maui with Daniel Paul and Gina Salá. Drawing from an unbroken tradition of Indian devotional singing, Daniel and Gina will introduce and lead us in the ancient practice of "Kirtan" (or chanting), the heart of devotional yoga. This practice of calling to the divine creates a bridge between the individual and the eternal, opening the heart and welcoming the spirit. Sometimes soft and meditative and sometimes loud and wildly rhythmic, Gina and Daniel will take the room on an emotional and musical journey giving voice to your inner most heart. No previous musical experience is needed.
Gina Salá is a singer, composer and chant leader with a repertoire of 23 languages. She first began chanting at the age of three living in an ashram in British Columbia and later deepened her practices wandering the Himalayas, in a buddhist monastery and in ongoing study with her Sanskrit, tantra, and classical singing teachers in India. Gina's engaging personality, voice and wealth of experiences have led her from Himalayan huts to programs at the United Nations, as lead singer for Cirque du Soleil, and beyond. Besides teaching regularly in her home in Seattle she also offers retreats and kirtans internationally, an annual "River of Sound" tour in India as well as private sessions in harmonium, Sanskrit mantra, wellness and voice via skype. With gratitude to the One who sings through us all, her passion is helping us to sing ourselves awake. www.ginasala.com and http://www.facebook.com/gina.sala.music
Daniel Paul is a Fulbright Award winning tabla drummer with a degree from the Ali Akbar College of Music (aacm.org) where he studied under India's great classical masters(Ali Akbar Khan, Zakir Hussain and Swapan Chaudhuri). His nine years at the conservatory included becoming a staff teacher and personal assistant to Maestro Khan as well as serving in many variations of the college's orchestras. His globe spanning career has since included classical recitals with India's master flutist G.S. Sachdev, and techno raves at Burning Man with Lost At Last. For the past two decades he has been a highly sought after accompanist to all of today's top kirtan singers, from the soft prayers of Snatam Kaur & Jaya Lakshmi to the rocking chants of Dave Stringer and the Guru Ganesha Band. He currently teaches at his home on Maui when not touring with Gina Salá or world music pioneer Jai Uttal. tabladaniel.com
