Becoming Scheherazade (Sunday Artist Shindig)
Direct from Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2017 Warts and All Theatre present The Thief of Baghdad's
Becoming Scheherazade Written and Performed by Kamaal Hussain.
Magic and reality collide as one British Arab navigates the voyages of Sindbad and tries to make sense of his own familys migration to the UK. An absorbing, moving, funny tale, full of unexpected twists and turns, Becoming Scheherazade uses The Arabian Nights; tales that spared Scheherazade from the Kings axe.
Becoming Scheherazade is the first iteration of a broader project collecting 1,001 stories from Arabs living in the West, aiming to create a contemporary parallel of The Arabian Nights and, like Scheherazade, tell stories to stave off annihilation.
Born in Iraq and raised in Leicestershire, Kamaal has been making theatre for the past 28 years. His career started at the Leicester Haymarket Theatre in 1994, and since then he has worked extensively nationwide as an actor and director. Living in London now, he still calls the East Midlands home, and is delighted to be performing Becoming Scheherazade in the region. Kamaal is Artistic Director of The Thief of Baghdad, a company which aims to collect 1,001 stories of Arabs living in the West.
