The Rochester Oratorio Society Chorus and Orchestra celebrates the Centennial of Women's Suffrage with a performance of "Grand Mass in E-flat," a masterwork of American sacred concert music by AMY BEACH. Born 150 years ago, Beach was widely renowned in her day as a virtuoso pianist and prolific, world-class composer. Her work remained largely unrecognized through the 20th century. This performance, for fully professional orchestra, four vocal soloists and large choir, conducted by ROS Artistic Director ERIC TOWNELL, is the third collaboration of the Oratorio Society with the University of Rochester Humanities Center, featuring a month-long series of panel discussions, presentations, readings and a pre-concert chat with WXXI Public Broadcasting host BRENDA TREMBLAY. Special Guests include CONCENTUS Women's Chamber Choir, directed by Gwendolyn Gassler. Congresswoman LOUISE SLAUGHTER offers welcoming remarks.
This performance, part of the City of Rochester's CENTENNIAL OF WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE celebration, is sponsored by a Humanities New York Action Grant and made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a re-grant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts at the Livingston Arts Center, a member supported organization. |
