"Dragmanity" Invasion! Bryant Lake Bowl Theater was the birthplace for "Dragmanity," and now we are taking "The Gender ART-chitects" show on the road! This hybrid drag and theater show is meant to bring diverse audiences together to investigate the creation of multiple genders (and their intersections with race, class, sexuality, abilty, etc.) and at the same time to enjoy comedy, class, and color!
Starring: Victoria Deville, Martina Marraccino, Gabrielle Deveaux, Diana Lopez, and your show director, Esmé Rodríguez!
Esmé, the Artistic Director and Producer of the troop, states, "For me, a drag queen is a performer who uses their body to incarnate, question, and innovate the ideas of femininities and masculinities. So, in some ways, (apart from 'Celebrity Impersonators') we are performing IDEAS of people- not people themselves. Being a drag queen, one does not have to always look like the singer that they have taken on or dress in exact costumes. Celebrity impersonation is one way of performing, and being a drag queen, for me, is having full capacity to create a new character. Being a drag queen means presenting amplified, over-the-top versions of ideas. It is constructing a character on top of the body.
Drag performance is a connective tool that brings together both performers and audiences from diverse backgrounds and lifestyles and entertains, while also educating audiences about the relationships between a kaleidoscope of gender identities and socially constructed power systems. |
