GONZO/ALOHA RADIO
GONZO:
Out of the South Bay Los Angeles area comes a solo artist with a smooth and soulful style all his own. Gonzo, born Ryan Gonzalez, blends a wide variety of musical influences and love-inspired messages to create a unique sound he refers to as Roots-Reggae-Soul. Within the last few years, his talent has been widely recognized on several levels within the reggae community, opening incredible opportunities for the roots musician still in the young stages of his career.
Best known for having a suave approach to delivering lyrics expressing his love of women and good ganja, Gonzos musical roots run back to when he was just a child. Inspired by his fathers encouragement to become a musical artist at a young age, Gonzo grew up in a household listening to Motown, Classic Rock, Oldies, Salsa, R&B, and Soul. At the age of fifteen he began playing guitar, adding another element in his musical journey. The young musician soon linked up with some high school friends to form his first band, now widely known as Fortunate Youth.
ALOHA RADIO:
Orange County, CA has no shortage of reggae and roots music. And actually, some of it is actually damn good! But a lot of it sounds the same. Everywhere you look, there are groups of tank top-wearing bros of all types combining their favorite reggae sounds with some faster punk rock and rap elements. Theres nothing wrong with that, but its hard for anything to stand out from the crowd when it all sounds kind of like Slightly Stoopid. Aloha Radio broke that mold with both of their albums this year (California Scheming and Stoked and Broke), as the four-piece took the working recipe and added some extra spice in the form of charismatic front woman Lauren Mulderrig. Although both albums are worth listening to, California Scheming contains just the right blend of chill reggae vibes with poppy rock tunes to please both roots fans and top 40 listeners alike. They havent blown up just yet, but Aloha Radio sounds like what should be playing in most dorm rooms on lazy afternoons. After opening for Shwayze this summer, it seems like theyre already halfway there.
