Community Policing: A View from the Streets

Lake View Lutheran Church
Chicago, IL

Sales have ended for this event.

Graphic videos of youth like Laquan McDonald and Paul O'Neal being killed by police are disturbing and perplexing, and they offer a glimpse into the tension and chaos that exist on the streets of Chicago's south and west sides.

Join us for a thought-provoking discussion on one of the biggest challenges facing our country today: how police and community members can work together to reduce violence.

Our panel will include a police officer who has also served as a Marine in Afghanistan. He will discuss his experiences with community-building in the Middle East, and how it informs his current work as a police officer.

Several of the youth enrolled in the Blue Sky Bakery transitional jobs program will also participate in the conversation. These youth live in some of the most violent neighborhoods in the United States, and have a complex relationship with the criminal justice system.

Moderating our conversation will be Stephanie Kollman, Esq., Policy Director of the Children and Family Justice Center at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law. Ms. Kollman manages research and reform projects benefiting the Illinois Juvenile Justice Commission.

Our evening will conclude with coffee and desserts provided by Blue Sky Bakery, and an opportunity to meet our panel.
