Cantemus Singers - Fair is the Rose
The Renaissance in English music barely began before it seemingly ended. The textbooks tell us of the glorious half-century of Tallis, Morley, Byrd; then a huge blank after Queen Elizabeth dies till Henry Purcell suddenly pops up well after the Restoration. Did music fade and wither away under the Jacobean Kings? No, of course not. In fact, the period from the accession to the throne of James the First to the death of Charles the Second was a time of musical innovation and change that helped solidify how we think of English Music to this day.
In our program Fair is the Rose, Cantemus Singers trace the transitions from the intricate counterpoint of madrigals to simple, melodic part-songs, and from elaborate polyphonic motets to full-on homophonic church anthems that gradually developed over the first half of the 17th century in England.
Carefree pastoral romps like Thomas Batesons Down the Hills Corinna Trips, become pensive reflections on the ephemeral nature of beauty in Orlando Gibbons Fair is the Rose, and double meanings of the bittersweet John Dowland lute song, Fine knacks for ladies. We will sing Gibbons Lift Up Your Heads, O Ye Gates, a masterpiece of Renaissance polyphony in the Byrd tradition. The austere and lush When David Heard That Absalon Was Slain by Thomas Tomkins will lead us down a path to Francis Pilkingtons soaring anthem O Praise the Lord, and the clearly baroque Magnificat in D by William Child. Our program features a varied selection of songs, madrigals and motets by these composers and others from the period, including Farmer, Wilbye and Lawes. We will be joined by accomplished lutenist, Benjamin Stein.
Our concerts take place at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Eaton Centre on Saturday, June 11 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, June 12 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are available here on Brownpapertickets.com, or at the door, for $20 general admission, with children under 12 admitted free; or call 416-578-6602 to have tickets set aside for pick-up.
