Titanic & Lace Jury Plays
PLEASE NOTE: Theater is up a flight of stairs; there is no elevator.

Guilford Center Stage presents the first performances of two one-act plays by Guilford playwright Michael Nethercott, at Broad Brook Grange in Guilford, Vermont.

"Nocturne Titanica" is a new take on the sinking of the Titanic, presenting an old, oft-told story in a new way. In this play, were presenting these events as a myth-tale, something happening on that night in 1912, but also endless and eternal. The narrator is a Shakespearean-style jester; the iceberg is a dancing Ice Spirit. Reality blends with legend.

"The Lace Jury," like Titanica, is drawn from an actual historical event, using it as a springboard. In this case, that event is one of Americas first all-woman juries. It took place in California only three weeks after that state granted womens suffragewhich is an interesting fact in itself. Our play explores what might have gone on in that jury room among a diverse group of women.  The trial took place in November 1911only five and a half months before the Titanic sank. So, the two plays deal with historical events that occurred within the span of half a year.

Nethercott serves as director of both plays, with a cast of nearly 20 area actors.

Guilford Center Stage, a project of Broad Brook Grange,  was created in 2015 to bring theater to the small, but charming stage at the 1896 Grange hall in Guilford Center.  Founders Don McLean and Laura Lawson Tucker intend to present "place-based" plays, which, as often as possible, will have connections to Guilford and to Vermont.

This production may not be suitable for young children.
