Fauna Shade + Tango Alpha Tango
Doors 7:30pm Show 8pm, All Ages

Fauna Shade is the music and sounds developed by frontman and Everett, Washington native Scotty Smith. Smith, now 21, combines psychedelia and pop sensibility from years spent experimenting, writing and recording tracks in his parents garage, located between the Puget Sound and Cascade Mountains. Joined live by drummer Richie Owen and bassist Derek Johnston, the band draws inspiration from early MGMT, Coco Rosie and T. Rex, while somehow forming a sound uncorrupted and free of pretense.

Their debut full length Baton Rouge, was recorded and co-produced by Jeff Southard at SWOON Studios (Night Beats, Tangerine) in Tacoma, Washington and released on April 18, 2015.

Consequence of Sound said it best; "Lead single "Marzipan" is a strange, swirling, wonderful example of what Smith is capable of. Guitars alternate between jaunty strolls of rippling reverb, feeling like rolling waves of drug-induced color. There's even a Floydian outro of zapping electronic wiggles. But the most fetching aspect of the track is Smith's voice itself. It's somewhere between T. Rex's Marc Bolan and WU LYF's Ellery James Roberts, part back-toothed growl, part heady vibrato. The captivating vocals are made even more intriguing by the lyrics about "a brief romantic encounter that [;;Smith];; didn't want to end too soon": "What we had was nice / Mac and cheese, two spoons / Gone too soon."

Fauna Shade will be rolling through the West Coast and Pacific Northwest with several festival dates including Sasquatch.

Portland's Tango Alpha Tango is best experienced amid a crowded room of sweaty guitar junkies. Logically, then, a well-mixed live album is the next greatest thing. Captured last year at local recording space Banana Stand, the performance delivered by the quartet tackles a sprawling beast in 12 songs. From the first bluesy electric-guitar riff in "Kill & Haight" to the gritty energy of "Black Cloud," the record not only translates frontman Nathan Trueb's ability to write a good tune and dominate a guitar neck, but also the band's flawless fusion of blues and rock with funky bass lines and psychedelic keys. Trueb explores his folkier singer-songwriter side on "Desert Snow," a song composed simply of his scratchy, worn-in voice and supplementary fingerpicking. But with nearly half the songs on the set list running eight minutes or longer, many of the album's gems surface when Trueb cracks them open with his guitar. In lengthy tracks like the trippy "In My Time of Dying" and the driving rock jam "Mona Lisa's Death," the frontman disassembles ideas, draws out phrases and slowly builds them up again. Although the album doesn't quite hit with the impact of experiencing the band in the flesh, it comes pretty damn close. EMILY BOOHER, WILLAMETTE WEEK
