John Mix Stanley was recognized as one of America's finest painters of Native people in the West. He was also an inveterate traveler and adventurer, logging perhaps more miles in the West than any other artist of his day. He visited the Pacific Northwest in 1847-1848 and again in 1853. Both trips were transformative for him and resulted in an aesthetically and geographically significant revelation for the American people. Curator, Peter H. Hassrick addresses the reasons why many of the perceptions of the Pacific Northwest, its people and land, were shaped by Stanley's paintings. |
