JOHN PENNY'S URBAN TUMBLE CD RELEASE

A NON-TYPICAL RELEASE OF VINTAGE, TIMELESS MUSIC.
JOHN PENNY:
John Penny has performed live and on TV with great Jazz musicians that include Hammond organ legend Captain Jack MacDuff, pianist Bobby Lyle, drummer Bernard Purdie, saxophonist George Braith, and drummer Erik Gravatt as a member of Gravatt's band Kaminari. Penny produced a CD in 1997 entitled A Lifetime of Jazz for the late Jazz trumpet player Gene Adams, a great and beloved Twin Cities talent. The release concert for the Adams CD is now regarded as the birth of the Twin Cities Jazz Festival. Following the production of A Lifetime of Jazz, Adams played trumpet on what is now track 5 of Penny's Urban Tumble CD, Equatis.
John Penny has composed music for TV commercials with such advertisers as Best Buy, Frito-lay, Mcdonald's, and NBC News. His music for long films included scores for the movie Patti Rocks, 3M, The Minnesota Twins, The United Way, and many others. Penny's work on soundtracks didn't keep him from composing an evolving collection of Jazz songs that were shelved for later release. The Urban Tumble project is the first release from those shelved sessions. Along with releasing previously shelved music, Penny continues to be engaged with evolving the art of guitar playing and composition.
The first half of the CD release party features new World Jazz compositions from the John Penny trio where Penny is joined by bassist Charlie Riddle and drummer Davu Seru. The second half steps back in time with timeless moods from the Urban Tumble release. The stage expands in the second half of the show when keyboardist Gregg Inhofer joins the band on selections from the CD. Singer Pippi Ardennia will heat things up further when she comes on stage to sing some of Penny's vocal songs. Other guests performers who played on the CD and more may also appear for this event.
