Copiapoa : Cactus Under the Influence of Fog
THE THING is very excited to team up with artist Christian Herman Cummings and Cactus Store LA for a special presentation, cocktail party, and plant specimen sale.
ABOUT THE PRESENTATION:
For eons, a particularly remarkable genus of cacti have thrived in Earth's most arid habitat.
However... In 1571, what few drops of rain Copiapoa needed yearly to propagate her seeds, permanently withdrew from the region. As a result, all plants in habitat stopped reproducing. Notwithstanding these grave environmental challenges, a vast population of ancient Copiapoa continue to dwell in habitat wherein every plant is now an astounding 445+ years of age - all thanks to a unique coastal fog phenomenon known as "The Camanchaca". In this presentation, Cactus Store's Christian Cummings explores the history and science behind fog dwelling cacti. What lessons might we learn from one of Earth's most adapted yet most delicate organisms? Attempting to unravel the paradox of a plant living halfway between what it is and what it isn't, we step into the impenetrable fog of conjecture to confront the Camanchaca.
*At the conclusion of the presentation, a limited number of mature Copiapoa will be available for adoption.
