Grupo de Rompe y Raja: Tribute to Victoria Santa Cruz Gamarra / Loco Bloco: Bay to Bahia
Since the revival period in Peru, many artists have recreated and evolved African rhythmic and dance forms that have become the folkloric music and dance of the coastal region of Peru. De Rompe y Raja Cultural Association will represent the genres of Festejo, Marinera, Landó, and Valse Criollo to commemorate the life and work of The Mother of Afro Peruvian Dance & Theatre, Victoria Santa Cruz Gamarra, who passed away last year at the age of 91. She has immensely impacted many, in particular those who very quietly work to recover the value of the African Legacy in the World. / Bay to Bahia re-connects audiences to past, present and future visions of community expression and resistance rooted in the "Bloco Afro" philosophy and San Francisco Mission district street arts. During the summer of 2013, Loco Bloco traveled with Tania Santiago to Brazil to engage in exchanges with Blocos of Salvador, Bahia. This piece expressesthe collision of two cultures in the powerful space of the roda or cypher, to create a musical explosion & celebration of cultural resilience and pride. San Francisco, California meets Salvador, Brazil.
