Citizen Wayne
Mark Volpe's Parallel Playhouse's "Citizen Wayne" depicts the farcical situations befalling stars and starlets of 1940s Hollywood as they collide with the legendary Orson Welles and his mad desire to play "Bat-Man." Welles and his old sparring partner John Houseman reinvent comicbookdom's caped crusader in Orson's own image and plunge his Mercury Playersplus Marlene Dietrich, Rita Hayworth, and Edward G. Robinsoninto a crazed, expatiating romp that keeps them one step ahead of vendetta-obsessed newspaper tycoon William Hearst. But is it enough for Welles to just play "Bat-Man"? As they plot a surreal confrontation with the Fuehrer in Berlin, will the genius behind "The Shadow," "War of the Worlds," and the legendary "Citizen Kane" strike at the heart of the Reich through the mythology of this fearsome dark knight? In Hollywood did Orson Welles a Stately Wayne Manor decree! (Batman is the property of DC Comics, and all references to the DC Universe in this not-for-profit stage production are made in a satirical manner. Also, Orson Welles died in 1985, and is therefore really not in this play.)
