Mother, a la Carte is a one woman play that explores the daily rituals and perceived miracles that we believe our mothers perform, and the feeling of failure and bitterness when we, as parents, cannot recreate them. The main character of the piece, The Daughter uses food from her Mennonite childhood, and the rituals of making tea, to come to terms with the mortality of her mother. Upon reflection of her own role as a mother, The Daughter learns about the power of forgiveness.
Mother, a la Carte is written and performed by Liberty Des Roches and directed by Rachel Smith. It was created from the many stories that were shared from other women from all over the world: Britain, Spain, Brazil, Canada, and Bahrain. Their stories, while having different names for food and ritual, were so incredibly similar. Mother, a la carte was originally performed in Word of Mouth Café, Edinburgh, Scotland to coincide with the 100th Anniversary of International Women's Day 2011. This sell-out show received overwhelmingly positive reviews from the Scottish press.
